Horses, hills and a warm welcome
Karamu Horse Adventures, formerly known as Karamu Trail Track, is a family-run horse trekking experience set across a working farm in the Waikato. For many of our riders, it's their very first time on horseback, and there's nothing we love more than watching that click.
We have a variety of horses, carefully matched to each rider's age, size and experience, and not all of them are in work at the same time so they get the rest they need. Many of our guides are experienced volunteers who genuinely love helping people enjoy their time in the saddle.
The wellbeing of our horses comes first, always. It's why we have a weight limit based on saddle fit, why our herd gets time off, and why our treks are fully guided from start to finish.

A herd chosen for every rider
Our horses are the heart of Karamu Horse Adventures. We keep a variety of them so we can match the right horse to each rider's age, size, confidence and experience, from steady, patient types for first-timers to livelier horses for those keen on a trot or a canter.
Not every horse is in work on the same day. They're rotated so they get regular rest, and their health and wellbeing always come first. It's why we have a weight limit based on saddle fit, and why every trek moves at a comfortable, safe pace.
Horse trekking in the heart of the Waikato
You'll find us on Smith Road in Karamu, tucked into the rolling hill country just outside Hamilton. It's an easy drive from Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Raglan, which makes a trek a great half-day out for locals and an easy stop for visitors exploring the Waikato.
The farm backs onto a network of tracks through hills, open farmland and pockets of native bush, so every horse trek comes with big Waikato views and plenty of fresh country air.
Whether you're a Hamilton local after a regular ride, a family hunting for a school-holiday activity, or a visitor keen to see the countryside from the saddle, you're in good hands. Our guides know the tracks, know the horses, and love sharing both.
New to horse riding? That's completely fine. Most of our riders are beginners, and no experience is necessary to come along and give it a go.

A lot of our guides are volunteers. It's not just a free ride, it takes real skill, confidence and people smarts, but it's hugely rewarding to help someone enjoy their first time on a horse.
