Trekking questions
What should I wear?
Suitable closed shoes are the most important thing. Please don't come in jandals, sandals or crocs, and avoid bulky or platform shoes, wide sneakers or heavy work boots. Your feet need to fit safely into the stirrup irons. For clothing, choose something comfortable and not too tight. Long pants are often more comfortable than shorts, but that's up to you.
Can my kids ride?
The minimum age for our horse treks is 5 years old, and we often take children of this age without any problems. Every child is different, so you know best whether yours is ready. We have limited spaces on each trek for very young children, and a lead pony is a great option for those not quite ready for a full trek.
Can my child ride with a parent on the same horse?
No. For health and safety reasons each person must be on their own horse. Our guides carry lead ropes, so if anyone is having difficulty their horse can be put on a lead to help.
Will I fall off?
Possibly. We do our absolute best to keep treks as safe as possible and falls at a walk are rare, but horses have a mind of their own. Most falls don't cause serious injury, but there are always risks involved in horse riding. Balance is the main factor, especially during a run or if a horse does something unexpected.
What happens if the weather is bad?
You're welcome to postpone or cancel beforehand if the forecast isn't great. We may contact you up to 24 hours ahead if the weather looks poor. A final call is usually made the night before or early that morning. See our cancellation policy for rebooking or refund details.
What if I get there and don't want to ride?
Never feel bad if you decide horse riding isn't for you on the day. If you don't feel comfortable at the start of the trek, you don't have to ride, and you're welcome to take a photo with your horse instead.
Can I add more people to my booking?
Yes, as long as there are still spaces available on your trek you're welcome to add more people.
Can I request a horse?
Yes. If you've ridden with us before and have a favourite, you're welcome to request them. We do our best to fulfil requests as long as the horse hasn't already been requested and is currently in work. Some horses may be needed for smaller or younger riders.
Am I too old to ride?
You're the best judge of that. You need to be able to climb the mounting log and swing your leg over to sit in the saddle, and staying in the saddle takes reasonable balance. We can offer some help but aren't set up to physically lift riders on. If you're less physically fit, a one-hour trek is probably plenty. If you have a medical or physical condition that could be made worse by a fall, horse riding isn't recommended.
Do you have a weight limit?
It isn't quite one size fits all. Our saddles are chosen to fit each horse and keep them comfortable, so it matters that the rider fits the saddle well too. As a general guide our upper limit is around 100kg, and we have a limited number of horses suited to heavier riders. The heavier the rider, the more important good balance in the saddle becomes. If you're not sure whether horse riding is right for you, get in touch and we'll happily talk it through.
How many people are on a trek?
Most of our treks average around 15 riders, though we sometimes have smaller or larger groups. The number of spaces varies because not all of our horses are in work at the same time. More riders usually means more guides.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive 30 minutes before your trek time. That gives you time to sign in, find a helmet that fits, hear the safety brief and be mounted so the trek leaves on time. If you arrive at or after your trek time, it may have to leave without you and we can't guarantee a later space.
How do I book?
Book online through the booking form on our Book Now page. Choose your date, time and trek option, and tell us a little about your group so we can allocate horses correctly. Full payment confirms your spaces.
Can I request a different date or time?
If we don't have what you're looking for, you can request a specialty trek or a trek outside our regular hours. Please be aware that minimum rates may apply, and we may not always be able to add a trek on your chosen day due to other prior commitments.
